House Hunters Nightmare

It's day five of our apartment search. We've seen a variety of places. Some were alright, one was nice, but today we saw one that was awful! We've been using a website called propertyguru.com.sg and would send the listings to our real estate agent to set up the appointments. The awful place didn't list an address just the street name, which should have made us suspicious. Our agent was apprehensive, but we persisted to see it anyway.

We met the apartment's agent in front of a dilapidated building where the first floor was used as a place of worship. He said it was a "walk-up" which literally meant we had to walk up stairs and at the top was the place. We took off our shoes before entering (common custom here), but were worried to lose them among the other million pairs scattered on the floor. When we reached the apartment there were two guys (current tenants) working busily on their computers in the middle of the living room. To the side of the room was a twin bed with clothes all over the floor. They used the place as a home office for their start-up company. One of the bedrooms was a board room complete with a whiteboard and a conference/pool table. The most memorable part was the kitchen and bathroom. You couldn't even tell it was a kitchen with all the boxes, papers, and other junk all over the floor. I bet there were cockroaches under there. The shower and toilet were in separate rooms which allowed the listing agent to claim this place had "2 bathrooms." Both "bathrooms" were dingy and someone's underwear was in a bucket. Yuck!! We regret not taking photos so you can all see for yourself. We were just in shock that people could live like this and charge 3300 SGD for this dump.

The evening ended on a happy note though. On our walk back to the MRT station we ran into a Chinese Opera performing in a park. Our agent said it was rare to see it nowadays so she was excited as well. Here was another dose of culture which kept us excited about living here.
